What is XAT?

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI) in Jamshedpur, India. XAT Exam for 70+ years as part of their MBA admissions process. XAT is one of the toughest MBA entrance exams in India, with 11 XAMI Member Institutes and 83 Associate Institutes, and over 600 Business Schools across India accepting XAT Scores for admission.

Xavier School of Management (XLRI) is one of the best business schools in India. It offers a number of full-time, residential degree programs including its PGDM HRM program and PGDM BM program, as well as many other Executive and certificate programs for those who are already employed by companies. XLRI has Executive FPM and BM programs that are designed to be convenient for people who are currently employed. Latest Changes in XAT 2026 Exam

  • XAT administration has made significant changes in the XAT exam pattern
  • The number of questions has been reduced from 101 to 95.
  • The GK section now has 20 questions instead of 25, including 12 on current affairs and 8 on static GK.
  • The total exam time is reduced to 180 minutes from 210 minutes.
  • The exam is divided into two parts. Part 1 is 170 minutes, and Part 2 is 10 minutes for the GK section.
  • AEW has been removed from XAT 2026 and integrated into the GD/PI stages of the XLRI selection process.
  • The GK score will be used only by XLRI Jamshedpur for final selection.

Who Conducts XAT & Its Purpose?

Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

  • Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline from a recognized university.

  • Final-year graduation students are also eligible to apply, provided they complete their degree within the prescribed timeline.

  • There is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation.

  • No age limit to apply for XAT 2026.

  • Candidates with professional degrees such as CA, CS, ICWA are also eligible.

Application Process & Fees

The application for XAT 2026 was completely online, requiring candidates to:

  • Create a login on the official portal,
  • Upload academic and identity documents,
  • Choose preferred test cities,
  • Pay the application fee through secure online payment.

The registration fee was set at a standard figure with an additional charge for specific XLRI programs (if selected). 

Admit Card & Exam Day Protocol

The XAT like nearly all entrance tests, has average difficulty and was paper based prior to 2017. In 2018 it transitioned to an online format. The length of the test will take 180 minutes to complete and consists of 4 parts:

XAT has 95 objective questions. Previously, the paper was divided into two parts, with Part I contributing to the final score and Part II including GK and Essay Writing. From 2024, the number of questions and duration have decreased. The exam now has sectional time limits: 170 minutes for Part I and 10 minutes for Part II. In Part I, there is -0.25 for incorrect answers and -0.10 after 8 unattempted questions. No negative marking in GK.

After the Exam – Answer Key, Results & Selection

After the exam is completed:

  • Response sheets are released within a few days,
  • Official answer keys are published soon after,
  • Candidates can raise objections during a short window.
  • Results and scorecards are announced by the third week of January 2026,
  • Shortlisted candidates are invited for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds, usually between February and April 2026
