Overview

The CUET is a single standardized test that allows prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply to multiple educational institutions at once. By administering one test that focuses on the applicant's knowledge of the subject matter, the CUET eliminates many of the challenges associated with applying for admission, including differing admissions processes, grade evaluations and comparing applicants from different regions and boards across the nation.

Eligibility

CUET UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency and is the common entrance for undergraduate admission to the central universities and to a large number of state, deemed and private universities that have adopted it.

  • Qualifying exam: class 12 or an equivalent. Candidates appearing in the current year may sit CUET.
  • Marks: CUET itself sets no minimum percentage. Each university sets its own for each programme, and those are published in the university’s prospectus rather than in the CUET bulletin.
  • Age: no age limit for the test. A university may apply one.
  • Subject match: the subjects you sit must match what the programme you want requires. This is the condition candidates most often get wrong.

How to Apply

The application is an online form on the NTA’s CUET website. Everything below is done in one sitting or saved and returned to; nothing is done on paper.

1

Register

Create an account on the NTA’s CUET website with an email address and mobile number you will still have months from now -- every notice, the admit card and the result reach you there. A registration number is issued; keep it.

2

Fill the form

The subjects you choose here are the whole exam. Check the requirement of every programme you intend to apply to before choosing, because a programme that asks for a domain subject you did not sit cannot admit you on a strong score in another.

3

Choose test cities

Cities are given in order of preference and allotted on availability, so the first choice is not guaranteed. Pick somewhere you can reach the morning of the exam without an overnight journey.

4

Upload photograph and signature

Both have to meet the format, size and background stated in the notification. A rejected upload is the most common reason a form is left incomplete past the deadline.

5

Pay the fee

Online, through the official portal only. The amount is set afresh in each year’s notification and is lower for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Keep the payment receipt.

6

Submit, then check

Print the completed form. A correction window usually opens afterwards -- it is limited, and it rarely covers every field, so it is a repair, not a second chance.

Apply only through the official portal. No agent can register you, and nobody can change a score once it is declared.

Selection Process

CUET is a test you assemble. Choosing wrongly cannot be repaired later in the cycle.

  • The paper is built from domain subjects, a General Test, and language papers. A candidate picks the combination their target programmes need.
  • Check each university’s requirement before choosing subjects. A programme that asks for a domain subject you did not sit cannot admit you on a strong score in another.
  • Marking is five for a correct answer and one off for a wrong one.
  • Scores are normalised across shifts where a subject runs in more than one.
  • The NTA does not admit anyone. It declares scores; each university then runs its own counselling against its own merit list and its own cut-offs.
