Overview
Founded in 1847, IIT Roorkee traces its roots back further than any other IIT, and today runs on a 365-acre campus in Roorkee, Uttarakhand with 6,380 students and 641 teaching staff. It is approved by AICTE and UGC and accredited by NAAC, and offers engineering and management programmes across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
In NIRF 2025, the institute ranked #7 overall in India (score 71.73/100), #6 in engineering (75.44/100), and #22 in management (61.77/100), placing it among the more consistently ranked IITs across disciplines rather than in engineering alone.
Placement outcomes vary by programme. In 2023-24, the four-year engineering UG cohort saw 769 of 1,102 graduates placed at a median salary of 17 LPA, while the two-year engineering PG batch had 68 of 128 placed at a median of 21 LPA. The two-year management PG programme placed 79 of 82 graduates at a median of 18.5 LPA, a stronger placement rate than the engineering streams that year. The five-year overall UG programme, by contrast, is smaller and saw only 10 of 22 graduates placed, at a median of 10 LPA.

Admission Process
In order to be accepted into an undergraduate program, a candidate must pass a national entrance exam followed by a central counselling process that allocates the available degrees. The results of the entrance exam will determine if a candidate is eligible to participate in counselling, then whether they can accept a seat, based on his/her entrance exam score ranking in a manner that takes into account their merit, their preferred programs of study or schools, and the number of available seats.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for entry into their program(s), applicants must have completed their higher secondary education with good marks in the natural sciences as part of their academic history. In order to be eligible to be admitted to undergraduate programs, applicants must also meet all entrance examination requirements, in addition to other subject-specific admission requirements, to be considered for admission.

The employability of engineering students graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is enhanced by a strong placement environment and dedicated placement cell. Infrastructure
This institution has a large and well-designed campus that has a number of hostels for students (separate for males and females). Each hostel provides students with various modern conveniences such as: access to the Internet; food services; recreation areas or public spaces for socializing; and security measures to keep residents safe. In addition, there are also medical facilities, banking services, and community service programs available on the campus.
Advanced educational facilities such as laboratories, research centres, lecture halls (with audio-visual equipment), and seminar space are available at The Institute. All of the resources available in the library (books, journals, and electronic databases) are made available to students for research purposes and other academic work. The use of computers at The Institute is supported through modern computing facilities and collaborative learning spaces. These resources enable innovative research and interdisciplinary development at The Institute.
The facilities for sports and recreation are wonderful, including many courts for badminton, basketball and tennis, and squash. There are also large grounds that serve many purposes for cricket, football , and athletics. All this plus indoor games, a swimming pool, a gym, and an activity club makes for a well-balanced lifestyle.
