Overview
Set up in 2008, IIT Patna sits on a 500-acre campus and currently has 2,577 students taught by 275 faculty members. It is approved by the UGC and AICTE, and takes in students through JEE Advanced for undergraduate engineering, IIT JAM and GATE for postgraduate programmes, and CAT for management courses.
In NIRF 2025, IIT Patna ranked #19 in the Engineering category with a score of 64.52 out of 100, and #36 in the Overall ranking with a score of 57.63. These placings put it among the more competitive IITs on the newer side, though behind the older, established ones.
Placements have trended upward for both degree levels. In 2023-24, the 4-year Engineering UG programme placed 320 of 335 graduates at a median salary of 22.5 LPA, up from 17 LPA the previous year and 22 LPA in 2021-22. The 2-year Engineering PG programme placed 120 of 130 graduates in 2023-24 at a median salary of 28 LPA, an improvement over 23 LPA in 2022-23 and 20.5 LPA in 2021-22.

Admission Process
IIT Patna has designed its admissions process to seek out those students who have demonstrated strong academic ability. Generally, students are admitted to undergraduate programs through national-level standardised university entrance tests, followed by a standardised counselling process. Students must complete all the documentation, undergo verification of their documentation, and go through the procedures set out by the relevant institution to have their admission confirmed, in accordance with the standardised admission process.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for admission at IIT Patna, all candidates must enter with the appropriate academic qualifications and the appropriate results on the entrance examination relevant to their chosen degree programme. Qualification includes successful completion of a recognised school leaving certificate or standardised assessment equivalent to the same along with acceptable results obtained on the entrance tests. Students are strongly encouraged to review their individual degree programme requirements before submitting their application to verify compliance with current admission standards.

The renowned placement cell of IIT Patna also acts as an important means for recruitment of students to various different sectors. Infrastructure
IIT Patna campus provides the latest residential facility which is planned to help in the overall development of the individual. Student hostels provide all the amenities required in order to study and also provide good accommodation, internet connection, dining halls, and recreation facilities. The green campus also helps in providing an overall healthy community environment.
